Okay, this is ridiculous.
For a discussion that was not meant to be racist, pretty much everything said here is really fucking racist.
First of all, not every POC was a slave or prostitute in 19th century France.
But in case you don’t feel like reading through the whole thing, here are some excerpts:
At the Congress of Vienna in 1815, France agreed to the abolition of the slave trade, though the trade continued to transpire illegally. The freed black population still thrived, but under laws that limited their movement and discriminated against them.
Blacks were permitted into France for educational purposes. As early as 1795 the French government had been giving scholarships to black colonial leaders and their sons for study in France.
In the 1820s to 30s a group of mulatto activists operated in Paris, including Adzée Louisy, poet Louis T. Houat, Cyril-Charles Bissette, and Mondésir Richard. They wrote a series of pamphlets opposing slavery and exposing racial oppression in France and the colonies. In 1834, Bissette started the first newspaper focusing on black culture and society, called the Revue des colonies.
In 1838 he [Charles Sumner] wrote that one lecturer “had quite a large audience among whom I noticed two or three blacks, or rather mulattos—two-thirds black perhaps—dressed quite à la mode and having the easy, jaunty air of young men of fashion.” He described them as being “well-received” by their white peers.
Yes. All prisoners and slaves and prostitutes. All of them. No revolutionary leaders or groups to speak of.
You’re assuming that all of Les Amis are white, when chances are, not all of them were. Not all of Les Amis were rich. Why wouldn’t POC participate in an uprising against the bourgeois? It would have benefited them just as much, and if Enjolras was POC they definitely would have followed him. Furthermore, white people have agreed with and participated in movements lead by POC.
I like that this is the thing you specifically elaborate on as Brick inaccurate instead of the other awful, misogynistic changes you mentioned in the first few sentences. But no, Enjolras being black is the biggest issue. Did you ever stop and think about the racist connotations of casting Enjolras as black and giving his role as a leader to Marius?
‘Person of color’ is literally a term coined by POC for POC, and if we’re being specific, Martin Luther King Jr. brought the term ‘citizen of color’ to prominence although it was used long before that, and for you to say that white should be a ‘color’ under that umbrella is offensive and ignorant of the term’s origins and usage.
POC can have golden hair and blue eyes. Hell, African people can have golden hair and blue eyes. If mixed heritage was significant within the French African community, there were probably a lot of variations of appearance, from hair color to skin tone to bone structure.
‘Gypsy’ is a racist term, so don’t use it.
The 2012 movie was white-washed as fuck. The main cast, with the exceptions of Sacha Baron Cohen and Samantha Barks, were all white.
As a POC, this entire conversation bugs me because IT’S RACIST.

One other thing to add: IDK what the original poster was talking about with this “the Amis wouldn’t follow a black Enjolras” shit, but it is the opposite of the truth. The Amis would follow the SHIT out of a black Enjolras. As it is, there is a 99.5% chance they fanboyed the shit out of Toussaint L’Ouverture, given that he (a) helped secure the abolition of slavery in the colonies and the extension of the ideals of the French Revolution to citizens of all races, (b) stood toe-to-toe against Napoleon, Toussaint representing the original rights and freedoms of the Revolution, Napoleon representing the betrayal of those ideals in favor of conquest and the re-establishment of slavery, and (c) led one of the few revolutions of that era to result in a lasting independent state, in addition to being principled and self-educated and a military genius and all around a pretty cool guy. A free black dude in France calling upon that legacy, especially one as principled and charismatic as Enjolras, would be perfectly in tune with the sympathies and hatreds of the republican movement, both on the specific issue of slavery in the colonies and on the wider ideals playing out in that struggle. Heck—Alexandre Dumas was immensely popular both as a Romantic playwright/novelist and as a republican, independently of his race or his family’s ties to French colonial history; in fact he wrote about them very little in his published works.
Which is not to say that 19th century France was ~perfectly enlightened~ or that a black Enjolras would not have to overcome ignorance and prejudice even from his friends—it is likely that he would have to work harder to prove himself, that he would be defined by his race and by his relationship to France’s colonial history in a way a white Enjolras wouldn’t have to think about, that he would be surrounded by well-meaning white boys formulating patronizing opinions on stuff they knew very little about. But Hugo’s Enjolras is an absolute, and these are not insurmountable obstacles—the large-scale, systematic dehumanization of POC and their exclusion from the upper classes/education/socially-respected roles was not practiced in mainland France in the early 19th century the way it was in the United States. French society was racist in different ways.
Okay no wait one more thing: I remain completely, utterly unimpressed by people who raise strenuous historical-accuracy objections to casting black actors in Les Mis, but become mysteriously less rigorous when it comes to Asian actors, as though ~historical inaccuracy~ were somehow proportional to how ‘close’ to whiteness someone is perceived as being. Hint: plenty of black people in 1820s France. A substantial East Asian population, not until much later.
(Disclaimer: author is white and interested in this period of French history in general, not by any means an expert in colonialism or 19c French race relations. Corrections welcome—on the Haiti stuff especially, I’m coming at this from a republican-politics POV and it probably shows.)
